The ovary is not usually visible in the female fetus. Occasionally, stimualation of the fetal ovary by maternal estrogen results in a prominant ovarian cyst.

Ovarian cysts are most often seen in third trimester fetuses. Fetal MRI can be helpful in visualizing the cyst separate from the kidney and liver.
