Department
of AnesthesiaAdvancing the science of anesthesiology by generating new knowledge is part of the mission of the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Consistent with this goal, many of our faculty are actively involved in a wide array of ongoing clinical and laboratory research projects. A summary of some of these projects is included on this website.
Participation in research is an optional part of residency and fellowship training. Residents may spend half of their CA-3 year engaged in research, or spend up to eighteen months of a four-year anesthesia residency conducting laboratory or clinical research. In addition, the NIH Anesthesia Center Grant awarded to the Harvard Anesthesia Departments provides two-year fellowships to support residents spending at least 80% time in research. These fellowships begin after the CA-3 year, and research may be conducted in laboratories of the four Harvard Anesthesia Departments (BWH, Massachusetts General, Beth Israel-Deaconess, Children's), other hospital-based laboratories, Harvard Medical School, or MIT.
